MPs want biotech watchdog
Article Abstract:
Recent events at troubled British Biotech, the largest UK biotechnology group, which has hit investor confidence and share prices in the sector as a whole, has led the UK parliamentary committee, the Science and Technology Select Committee to urge the appointment of a regulator for the UK biotechnology industry, responsible for checking the credibility of companies' public announcements relating to clinical trials. The three month enquiry has also concluded that the boards of biotechnology groups should contain at least one non-executive director with a scientific background to help increase research funds and restore investor's confidence. The committee's report is expected to criticise the board of British Biotech for its handling of the feud between former head of clinical trials, Dr Andrew Millar, and Dr Keith McCullagh, the outgoing chief executive, which was largely due to the lack of regulatory measures in the industry.

The day I discovered I am a walking cliche
Article Abstract:
The 'Britain 1999' document issued by the Office of National Statistics gives an insight into the significant social changes taking place in the UK. It is becoming much less common for people to marry. Indeed, by 2010 there will be more unmarried adults than married ones. Similarly, many women are deciding against having children at all or are having children later in life. Fewer people attend church regularly than in the past, while levels of disposable income are rising.
