Actor Nigel Hawthorne was born in the UK, but was brought up in South Africa. He returned to the UK in 1951, but was unable to obtain regular work and returned to South Africa in 1957, where he enjoyed some success as an actor. He returned to the UK in 1963, but it took many years to establish a reputation as a character actor. He did not really come to public attention until he appeared in 'Yes, Minister' in 1970. He gained particular respect for his performance in 'The Madness of King George III.'

Playwright and autobiographer Lillian Hellman, who died in 1984, is profiled. She gained particular recognition for her autobiographies, published between 1969 and 1976. They established her as a leader of the struggle against fascism.
