Major insists ERM must be reformed

British Prime Minister John Major told the House of Commons that Britain would not rejoin the European Monetary System (ERM) until the system was changed.Chancellor Mr Lamont said German unification had caused the crisis in the currency markets and further compatibility with non-inflationary growth was needed. The Maastricht Bill would not proceed until The Danish intentions were settled. Subsidiarity would be discussed at the European Council on Oct 16 1992 at the International Conference Centre, Birmingham, England.

Shadow Trade and Industry spokesman Robin Cook accused ministers of deception in the House of Commons debate about the Matrix Churchill case. He said there had been a change of policy in the guidelines which had not been declared. President of the Board of Trade Michael Heseltine defended the government, saying he had not attempted to conceal information. He stated that the policy had continued until the UN embargo on trade with Iraq was enforced.
