Mechanical miracles: half art, half craft, all daft
Article Abstract:
Automata are made of wood or metal and are moving models of humans or animals that are brought to life by turning a crank and they have become very popular again over the last few years. They can be seen in such places as the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre run by Sue Jackson which has been in the cellars of old Covent Garden market for the past six years. They originated in Switzerland and Germany. The Victoria and Albert museum houses the 200-year-old clockwork tiger of Tipoo Sahib, an Indian soldier. Modern makers such as Paul Spooner, Keith Newstead and Peter Markey allow the actual working mechanisms to be seen.

Spectre in the court
Article Abstract:
Former rock music producer Phil Spector is currently making a rare appearance in public as he attends the High Court in London, England. He hopes to receive loyalties which he claims are due to him for performances over the last 10 years of the song 'To Know Him Is To Love Him,' which was a hit for the Teddy Bears in 1958. This song made him famous, and characterises his unique sound. The title was taken from the epitaph on the grave of his father, who committed suicide when Spector was only nine years old.

Industrial ideals of our fathers
Article Abstract:
The Brynmawr Rubber Factor in Ebbw Vale, Wales, set up after the second world war, was designed by Architects Co-Partnership (ACP) and engineered by Ove Arup and Partners. It was a visionary development, using new materials and being humane and democratic in design. It has been empty since the early 1980s, and Blaenau Gwent Borough Council hopes to be able to demolish it. This would represent the loss of a great example of Modernist architecture.
