Michael Portillo misjudged politics and public
Article Abstract:
Michael Portillo made a severe error of judgement in using the replacement of the royal yacht, at a cost of 60 million pounds sterling, as a party political issue. He has also failed to judge public opinion, which generally supports the monarchy but feels that the royal family is a heavy burden on the taxpayer, correctly. Portillo is partly an outsider in the Conservative party, and this actually gives him strength as a politician, ensuring that he has a wider view. However, there is a danger that he will be seeking to further his political career with view which have now been superseded.

So how will Mr Hague deal with his new rival?
Article Abstract:
Michael Portillo's selection as the UK Conservative party's candidate for the seat of Kensington and Chelsea, London, England, will not present problems for party leader William Hague in the short term. Portillo will be a valuable addition to a Shadow Cabinet lacking brilliance and weight. However, it is difficult to see which role he would occupy in the longer term without creating problems. If he were to become popular among ordinary people, this may make him unbeatable in a contest for the leadership of the Conservative party.
