Mormon wives lift veil on the miseries of polygamy
Article Abstract:
Very little is known about polygamists living in Utah. The state does not wish to draw attention to them, as they are a potential embarrassment as it prepares for the Winter Olympics in 2002, and they have been rejected by the mainstream Mormon Church. However, it is thought that polygamy is still practised by between 50,000 and 60,000 fundamentalist Mormons in Utah. It is technically illegal, but the authorities have preferred not to prosecute. This may change as evidence emerges that polygamists are involved in pornography, child molestation and incest.

'We have two Democratic parties now.' (efforts to maintain unity within Democratic party)
Article Abstract:
The White House is placing considerable emphasis on ensuring unity within the Democratic party as President Bill Clinton seeks to secure his political future. Presidential aides are paying particular attention to around 40 Democrats in Congress who are believed to be in danger of criticizing Clinton publicly. Most Democrats are either keeping their opinions private or working with the White House to fight off the Republican offensive, but a significant minority may already have turned against Clinton.

Canada draws line over cracks
Article Abstract:
The Canadian government plans to build a new high-speed railway from Quebec City to Windsor, Ontario. This would run for 740 miles, and pass through cities including Toronto and Montreal. It would cut the current lengthy journey time by half, with the trains traveling at 180mph. There are political issues associated with the scheme, especially as most of the cost of around C$18 billion would have to be met by Ontario, Quebec and the federal government.
