It is wise to avoid external modems, as they can be large and need several cables. It is better to purchase at PC Card, even though it is more expensive than a conventional external modem. It is also possible to gain Internet access through a digital mobile phone using a specially adapted PC card.

Speed is not everything in a modem

Article Abstract:

Latest modem technology is very advanced, but it is widely accepted that any future improvements will require a fully digital link between subscribers and the Internet. Ordinary modems are too slow to handle latest multimedia, and faster access will also allow Internet service providers to offer a wider range of features. The new technologies which are currently showing most potential are ISDN 2 and ADSL, which is capable of carrying up to 8mbps to the subscriber's home.
