There are now a number of ways to access the Internet while away from the home or office. For users who simply require access to e-mail and the World Wide Web, a laptop computer is the best solution. It is wise to avoid external modems, as they can be large and need several cables. It is better to purchase at PC Card, even though it is more expensive than a conventional external modem. It is also possible to gain Internet access through a digital mobile phone using a specially adapted PC card.

Speed is not everything in a modem
Article Abstract:
Latest modem technology is very advanced, but it is widely accepted that any future improvements will require a fully digital link between subscribers and the Internet. Ordinary modems are too slow to handle latest multimedia, and faster access will also allow Internet service providers to offer a wider range of features. The new technologies which are currently showing most potential are ISDN 2 and ADSL, which is capable of carrying up to 8mbps to the subscriber's home.
