UK: SNP APPOINTS SWINNEY AS NEW LEADER

Article Abstract:

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has appointed John Swinney, a hardline supporter of Scottish independence, as its new leader. Swinney won the leadership contest by defeating Alex Neil, the SNP's social security spokesman, by a margin of 547 votes to 268. Swinney argued that the SNP was now at the centre stage of Scottish politics, and that he had the opportunity to lead the country to full independence.
