New Paxil indication targets excessively shy
Article Abstract:
SmithKline Beecham's antidepressant drug Paxil has been approved by the FDA for treating excessive social anxiety disorder. The approval in May 1999 makes the drug the first for treating social anxiety disorder, which is found in over 10 million Americans. However, the drug has not been tested on children with social phobia and should not be used to treat common shyness. Clinical trials also revealed some side effects of Paxil, including nausea, constipation and decreased libido, which affect 10% of users.

Easing anxiety: a treatment update on general anxiety disorder
Article Abstract:
Some research findings strongly suggest that the generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is primarily a biologic illness associated with abnormalities in many neurotransmitter systems. The treatment of GAD includes a combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. The three options for the pharmacotherapy treatment of GAD are benzodiazepines, azapirones and antidepressants. Herbal products can also be used for treating GAD, but their effectiveness has not yet been established.

Showdown: COX-2 inhibitors beat NSAIDs
Article Abstract:
Three studies reveal that COX-2 inhibitors are better and safer than traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The findings were presented at the International Conference on Inflammopharmacology and 6th Symposium on Side-Effects of Anti-inflammatory Drugs held in Georgia in May 1999. Since the discovery of COX-2, only Celebrex and Vioxx are available in the market. Both drugs were approved by the FDA in 1999.
