Newcastle divided as Toon army aim to camp on the moor
Article Abstract:
There is considerable controversy in the city of Newcastle, England, regarding plans by Newcastle United Football Club to construct a 55,000-seater stadium on Castle Leazes moor, which is situated in the centre of the city and has been in common ownership for more than 700 years. City councillors remain undecided about the scheme, and there has been fierce opposition from local people who believe that the open space should be protected from development. There are now calls for a referendum of city taxpayers on whether the scheme should be allowed to go ahead.

Club caught in football's murky world
Article Abstract:
The UK Football Association is to investigate football agent Tom Lawrence, who is believed to have attempted to add 125,000 pounds sterling to a transfer fee of 75,000 pounds sterling when striker Mathias Svensson moved from Swedish club Elfsborg to Portsmouth football club in Dec 1996. There is evidence that Lawrence asked Portsmouth to send 200,000 pounds sterling to Elfsborg, but the Swedish club contacted Portsmouth directly because of a delay in payment and revealed that it had been asked to redirect 125,000 pounds sterling to Lawrence's solicitor.

Talk of the Toon

Considerable controversy surrounds Newcastle United football club chairman Freddy Shepherd, who has been reported in a tabloid newspaper to have had encounters with prostitutes around the world and to have described Newcastle, England, women as 'dogs.' Similar allegations have been made about the club's vice-chairman Doug Hall. It seems that Shepherd has a large network of influential friends and supporters in local and national government. However, ordinary fans are now calling for him to resign.
