Next up - the Matthew Bannister show
Article Abstract:
Listeners to BBC Radio 1 fell from 25 million in the 1970s to 19 million in the 1990s. The advent of 300 new radio stations is part of the reason. A new controller, Matthew Bannister, was appointed in Jul 1993. Mr Bannister, 36, comes from Nottingham and worked at GLR. The report on the future of the BBC, 'Extending Choice,' recommends Radio 1 should have more speech than commercial radio, as it already has, and should be more informed and intelligent. DJ Tony Blackburn feels producers are unnecessary: they are not used in commercial radio. The variety of music should make it distinctive.

Boyz 'n' the hoods
Article Abstract:
Boyz II Men, from Philadelphia, have a number one hit with 'End of the Road' but their album 'Cooleyhighharmony' flopped when it was released in the UK in 1991. The four group members are aged between 16 and 20 and have no alcohol or drug problems. They like listening to rap. In public they wear identical clothes. They employ bodyguards since one of their road crew was shot dead in Chicago, America. The gospel harmony group Take 6 advised them on their music.
