Article Abstract:
It is important to accept what a composer wrote at face value, rather than trying to interpret it, according to Osmo Vanska, principal conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. If conductors ensure that music is played as it is actually written, rather than how it is conventionally played, then new meanings can emerge. The conductor must have some form of inner identification with the music, or the performance will be pointless. Vanksa has gained a strong reputation for his conducting of the music of Sibelius.

Busking it till a fairy godmother turns up
Article Abstract:
Conductor-composer Oliver Knussen has a limited repertoire so far, but has gained valuable experience with the London Sinfonietta and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He originally planned only to do guest conducting, but would now seriously consider an offer to work long-term with a single orchestra. He has recently conducted works by Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Colin Matthews for Deutsche Grammophon.

A bit of Beethoven, Belioz, maybe even Brahms ... but period Bruckner? You must be joking. Not Roger Norrington
Article Abstract:
Conductor Roger Norrington is currently working on a project which involve recreating the playing style of Wagner's own time. He is happy to be criticised for tackling projects of this kind, being opposed to the modern trend of idealising 'sound' as an end in itself. He believes that music is made with sound, rather than being about sound, and focuses on expression, gesture, drama and movement.
