Now that's what I call equality of opportunity

Article Abstract:

The UK government's planned approach to selecting candidates for the Scottish Parliament may have significant implications for UK politics as a whole. The 72 Scottish constituencies will be paired on the basis of location and winnability. Each pair will have a single selection procedure from which the most popular male candidate and the most popular female candidate will be selected. This approach is attracting some controversy, as ordinary people in the UK are generally still rather suspicious about positive discrimination.

How many politicians does it take to represent a Scot?

Article Abstract:

All Scottish citizens are currently represented by a councillor, an MP and an MEP. When the Scottish Parliament begins operating, this representation will change significantly, with each Scottish citizen being represented by a councillor, an MP, eight Members of the Scottish Parliament and eight MEPs. This will create significant problems relating to the sharing of responsibilities. If new electoral systems and political structures create confusion, then ordinary people are likely to become more cynical about politics.
