Now we're safe and secure until the election, says Fox

Article Abstract:

The UK's Conservative government has shown by its victory in the recent vote on the Scott report that it is in a strong position, not relying on the support of the nine Ulster Unionist MPs. It will now be able to survive until it decides to call a general election, according to Sir Marcus Fox, chairman of the 1922 backbench committee executive. However, opposition MPs point out that prime minister John Major continues to rely on support from the three Democratic Unionist MPs, who did not vote on the Scott report.

Victors differ over signals for future in Tories' defeat

County council elections on the same day also defeated Conservative candidates all over the country, creating 28 hung councils out of 47.
