Older than the stars

Article Abstract:

Scientists have been using a number of different techniques to date the Universe, but these all imply that the minimum age of the Universe is 13 billion years. The most accurate estimates of the ages of the oldest stars, which are the oldest known objects in the Universe, are now between 10 billion years and 12 billion years. New supernova studies have indicated that the rate at which the Universe is expanding is growing. However, astrophysicists recognize that the 2 billion years that allow for the oldest stars currently in existence to have formed after the Big Bang are quite sufficient.

If you really want to know, look in the mirror

Article Abstract:

It is possible that the Universe is multiply connected, with the light reaching Earth having spent 15 billion years on its journey but having spent all that time bounding around from one copy of the Universe to another. Researchers Neil Cornish and David Spergel have calculated how the Universe's topological structure could have an impact on the way microwave background radiation is seen. Their simple topology should produce ring-shaped patterns in the microwave background radiation, but too faint to have been detected so far.

Things can only get bigger

Article Abstract:

There has been publicity given to the discovery that the expansion of the Universe is occurring more rapidly than previously thought. This discovery includes the notion of 'dark energy', which helps cosmologists to solve problems that they had previously not understood. The Universe appears to expand more rapidly as it grows, and dark energy looks set to become more important in the distant future. Mass energy and dark energy components appear to be of similar dimensions, and this is unusual in the Universe's history.
