Omagh's legacy of sadness and hope

Article Abstract:

The terrorist bomb attack in Omagh, Northern Ireland, will have a positive impact on the peace process, bringing people together rather than widening rifts. There are already indications that republicans and Unionists are coming closer together, and there is a strong sense of political determination. Northern Ireland is gaining political coherence, even though the ultimate aims of republicans and Unionists remain very far apart. There is hope for the future because many obstacles have already been overcome.

...Nothing will ever be the same again

Article Abstract:

The peace agreement in Northern Ireland has the potential to create a civil society out of sectarianism and tribalism. It is certain that the peace agreement will be approved in the referendum on May 22, 1998, heralding a new era for Northern Ireland and for Ireland as a whole. A strong 'yes' vote will make it possible to base society on reasonableness, moving away from the strong culture of confrontation that has characterized Northern Ireland for many years.

Blasted from both sides

Article Abstract:

UK prime minister John Major hoped that holding an election in Northern Ireland would influence the peace process. This has certainly been the case, but not in the way which Major had expected. Sinn Fein received strong support, indicating republican approval of the last ceasefire and the strong desire of ordinary people for a new ceasefire to begin. Peace may now be more likely after the election, but the prospects for a peace agreement appear less good.
