One country, free voices?
Article Abstract:
It is currently very uncertain whether there will be true journalistic freedom in Hong Kong after it reverts to Chinese sovereignty. Some observers claim that a free press is essential if Hong Kong's business community is to continue to perform very strongly, while others point to ambiguous signals from China. Some feel that the mainstream media has been shifting towards self-censorship for some time already, and newspapers have certainly been repositioning towards their Cantonese market.

Voices raised in praise of song
Article Abstract:
The UK national curriculum requires the teaching of music to include musical style and rhythm, which can be done through singing as musical instrument instruction is expensive. School choirs can sing folk songs, hymns, arrangements from musicals and modern songs. The British Federation of Young Choirs (BFYC) conducted a survey in 1991 which discovered only one in 3,000 schools where children over 12 sang during music lessons, and only 1/4 of primary schools which taught part singing.

Ascending voices
Article Abstract:
Song recitals are beconing more popular, with several London venues putting them on their programmes. Classical singers moving into popular music appear to have also revived song recitals. Venues such as the Purcell Room on the South Bank, the Wigmore Hall and the Blackheath Concert Halls are all holding recitals. Songs are not so popular as opera among singers as recitals require more work, but they do provide opportunities for more complex musical exploration.
