The UK's 2001 general election gave Sinn Fein and the Democratic Unionist Party more influence in Northern Ireland, while the more moderate Ulster Unionist Party and SDLP lost ground. Further challenges for Northern Irish politics have arisen from David Trimble's decision to resign as First Minister if the IRA fails to move towards decommissioning.

Even today, the struggle for peace is not over
Article Abstract:
IRA decommissioning will not automatically bring peace to Northern Ireland. Hatred between the Protestant and Catholic communities is deeply embedded, and old wounds will take a long time to heal, especially in areas such as the Ardoyne region of Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Will tomorrow's statement save the peace process?
Article Abstract:
Measures intended to secure the future of Northern Ireland's devolved institutions are to presented shortly. It is also hoped to begin the process of IRA weapons decommissioning, retain the Good Friday Agreement and, preferably, bring David Trimble back as First Minister.
