One man's obsession to beat the world of sport into submission
Article Abstract:
Media magnate Rupert Murdoch has exerted growing influence over sport since the early 1990s through his television interests, including BSkyB. He is now seeking to gain control over sports teams themselves as digital technology, which will allow teams to create their own channels and sell games directly to fans, becomes established. This is reflected in his 575 million pounds sterling bid for Manchester United football club. Other teams are likely to object strongly to Murdoch being both a purchaser and a seller of television rights.

People's game is dead, say opponents
Article Abstract:
Many observers have expressed concern about the future of football in the UK following the purchase of Manchester United football club by BSkyB. It is felt that football has now become too closely associated with money and that top clubs are no longer concerned with ordinary people. Furthermore, many people feel that television is becoming too influential in football. The Football Association has stated that those involved in the Manchester United deal should explain clearly why it is desirable.
