Opening a Cannes of worms

Article Abstract:

The 1998 Cannes films festival appears set to run more smoothly than the 1997 event, which suffered poor films and bad weather. For 1998, there seems to be a good balance between European art house and Hollywood films, and many celebrities are due to attend, including Bruce Willis, Hugh Grant and Jeanne Moreau. Some people attend the Cannes film festival simply to be seen and to go to lots of parties, but for others it is an important business event where many films are bought and sold.

Packaging the Holocaust

Article Abstract:

Mixed views have been expressed about 'The Last Days,' the Holocaust documentary produced by Steven Spielberg and researched and directed by James Moll. Some observers feel that it is moving but rather lightweight, particularly in comparison with Claude Lanzmann's 'Shoah.' However, it won the 1999 Best Documentary Academy Award. Moll spent more than four years making this documentary, but feels that he is still confused by the inhumanity and irrationality of the Holocaust.

No Cannes do for the Brits

Article Abstract:

There are no British feature films competing for an award at the 2001 Cannes film festival. This can be seen as an indication of the declining international reputation of the UK film industry.
