Ray Owens, owner of a pet shop in Shreveport, Louisiana, is planning a national organization of pet retailers called the Pet Professional Retail Organization (PetPRO). Up to now, there has been no group to represent independent pet retailers.

Rising costs outpaced the gain in retail sales by pet shops in 1981. Sales of birds and freshwater fish increased, but sales of dogs and cats were lower.
