Paddy Devlin
Article Abstract:
Politician Paddy Devlin joined Fianna, the youth wing of the IRA, at the age of 11. He was in the senior IRA by the age of 14, and his IRA activities led to his internment in 1942. He had left the IRA by 1950, and subsequently became a senior member of the Northern Ireland Labour Party. He was a founder member of the Civil Rights Association and the Social Democratic and Labour Party. After this party joined the 1974 power-sharing administration, Devlin became Health Minister.

Cathal Goulding
Article Abstract:
Political activist Cathal Goulding came from a family with long-standing Republican links. He worked as a painter and decorator, but spent a total of 16 years in prisons in the UK and Ireland. He played a significant role in Republicanism at the time of the creation of the Provisional IRA in 1969 to 1970, and served as IRA chief of staff for many years. He was eventually left in charge of a grouping which became known as the Official IRA.

Article Abstract:
Northern Ireland peace talks are being held up over the issue of the decommissioning of republican weapons. Some observers believe that the entire future of the peace process is now in danger, with this issue highlighting the wide gap in opinion which still exists between Britain and Ireland. Nationalists fear that any moves to decommission would split the republican movement, leading to a resumption of violence.
