Pass the gingko
Article Abstract:
The use of vitamins and herbs for disease prevention has achieved mainstream acceptance. This trend has prompted the FDA and American Society of Hospital Pharmacists to consider the possible regulation of these products. Moreover, pharmacists are faced with increasing questions about the effectiveness of these products. It is argued that pharmacists can help consumers by recommending only products that follow high manufacturing standards. It is also argued that regulation of vitamins and herbs is unnecessary since there is no harm in taking these for preventive purposes.

Collaborative efforts get physician support
Article Abstract:
Two physicians expressed their unreserved support for pharmacists' involvement in immunizations and health screening at the American Pharmaceutical Assn's annual convention on Mar 5, 1999. The doctors noted that pharmacists could help with immunizations and the monitoring of blood glucose and cholesterol levels but should communicate with the doctors concerned in conducting these activities. Pharmacists' expanded role in patient care could substantially contribute to patient compliance.

Selling a partnership
Article Abstract:
A partnership relationship between pharmacists and physicians is mutually beneficial. One who succeeded in this respect is Marialice Bennet, director of Wellness and Clinical Partners Programs at the Ohio State University. Both Bennett and her physician partner acknowledge the benefits of partnership, prompted them to plan an inter-disciplinary clinic. Bennett believes that pharmacists can gain support from physicians for pharmaceutical care by selling to them the idea of partnership.
