Standardized poverty measurement

Article Abstract:

The demographic technique of direct standardization and shift-share analysis was used to develop a method for addressing the problem involving compositional factors in the estimation poverty. The method was used with the Family Expenditure Survey to measure absolute and relative poverty trends in the UK. Results show that changes in relative and absolute poverty depend on the poverty index used. Results also reveal the relationship between poverty and household structure.
