Peru hostage-takers' fatal own goal; spectacular rescue marked a triumph for months of meticulous planning
Article Abstract:
The 14 Tupac Amaru guerrillas who were holding 72 hostages at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima, Peru, were all killed as the Peruvian special forces launched an unexpected assault on the building to free the hostages. The operation had been very carefully planned, and the special forces had probably received advice and training from the US Delta Force, the SAS and the German GSG9. Planning was helped by a tunnel which had been dug under the reception hall of the building, allowing the guerrillas to be monitored.

All-out Balkan war looms after new offensive
Article Abstract:
Croatia attacked Krajina to gain the land link between north and south. It wants roads through Krajina re-opened and Croation law re-imposed. If the offensive continues it could provoke a full scale war with Serbia. Croatian and Serbian/Montenegrin forces have about 100,000 troops each. The Serbians have more equipment and ammunition, from the former Yugoslav army and arms factories in Serbia. Serbia has the advantage in the air with 500 fixed wing aircraft and 140 helicopters. Croatia possesses most of the naval bases.

British troops for Africa
Article Abstract:
A multinational force of 10-12,000 troops will be sent to Zaire in an attempt to deal with the refugee crisis there. This force will include up to 3,000 British troops, as well as troops from countries including Canada, the US, France and South Africa. It is hoped that it will be possible to stabilise the situation and to hand over to African forces after three months. The force will be made up mainly of logistical support troops, medical staff and engineers, rather than combat infantry.
