Police unit to target green protestors

Article Abstract:

A new special national police unit in the UK will use information from MI5 and the Special Branch to investigate the activities of environmental campaigners. The creation of this unit, to be named the National Public Order Intelligence Unit, has been prompted by growing concerns among top police officers about the fact that environmental campaigners are becoming increasingly organized and could represent a significant threat to public order. Some observers believe that this development could have a negative impact on civil liberties and the right to peacefully demonstrate.

Safety warnings over cargo ship defects 'ignored.'

Article Abstract:

Lloyds Register of London and other international safety organisations advise shipowners about corrosion and structural damage of bulk carriers, but this has been ignored, leading to 27 sinking between 1990 and Jul 1992. Bulk carriers are designed to cope with severe conditions when transporting dry goods yet over 200 have been damaged between 1990-1992. The UN International Maritime Organisation is investigating the problem. Incorrect or speedy loading also damages the carriers. Some are 20 years old and should have been replaced.
