Pressure mounts on boat people to go home

Article Abstract:

The Communist victory in South Vietnam triggered a refugee crisis which has been going on since the mid-1970s. Many thousands of Vietnamese people left the country in boats, and many perished at sea. Those who reached countries such as Malaysia received a very hostile welcome. Attempts to repatriate the refugees have been fiercely resisted, and many still remain in camps. However, the UNHCR is now determined to take a strong line, and some 40,000 people are set to be returned to Vietnam.

Yeltsin joins the world club

Article Abstract:

Boris Yeltsin is country hopping in his new role of world politician and receiving warm welcomes. On Jan 30 92 he flew into London for a brief meeting with Mr Major and to sign a joint declaration of partnership with Britain. He then flew on to America, more assured of a welcome than he was six months ago when he was seen as a troublemaker. The West is accepting that he has a different stance from Gorbachev and that he wholeheartedly supports the cause of a market economy.

Resignation undermines German coalition

Article Abstract:

The Free Democrats, the junior partner in Germany's coalition government, have seen the resignation of their leader, Klaus Kinkel. This follows very poor performances in recent elections. The move may damage the long-term stability of the coalition government, and may form the basis for significant changes in the German political scene. Kinkel will retain his position as foreign minister.
