Civil engineer Alec Skempton was born in Northampton, England, in 1914. He studied Civil Engineering at the City & Guilds College in London, England, and then joined the Building Research Station. He joined the City & Guilds College as a full-time lecturer in 1946.

Civil engineer Tom Williams was born in Cwmtwrch, Wales, in 1923. He studied at University College, Swansea, Wales, and Durham University, England. He became Assistant Lecturer to King's College, Durham, in 1948.
