Profits plunge points to dark times ahead
Article Abstract:
There is concern about a drop in British Corporate profits in 1st qtr 1999 of 9.4%. The evidence had previously pointed to the UK benefiting from a soft landing, but these new data are more worrying. Factors affecting the British economy include preparation for the new European currency, drops in exports and rises in imports. Raw materials prices are rising, but it is difficult to pass on price rises, and output prices are falling. Consumption is increasing, and this could lead to inflationary pressures.

Labour's record-breaking employment miracle rolls on - but for how long?
Article Abstract:
Unemployment has fallen to extremely low levels in the UK, and the Treasury now believes that the traditional view that there is only a fixed number of jobs in the economy has been proved incorrect. However, it is uncertain whether it will be possible for unemployment to continue to fall. Some observers feel that overall productivity rates will decline as more and more people enter the workforce, while others highlight the considerable cost to small businesses of taking on new employees.

Is the Dow really heading for 36,000?
Article Abstract:
James Glassman and Kevin Hasett of the American Enterprise Institute believe that the risk of holding equities has fallen, and possibly does not exist at all any more. For this reason, analysts should no longer be concerned if stock prices rise and yield falls. They believe that dividend yield could fall from 1.5% to 0.4% while still permitting shares to have a reasonable price. This means that the value of the Dow Jones could rise to 36,000 without shares becoming overvalued.
