Punishment, fear and humiliation - the bully's way

Article Abstract:

British Airways has acted in a completely unjustifiable manner in some elements of the stance it has adopted towards cabin crew who are threatening to strike. It could be argued that the airline is entitled to be tough with the Transport and General Workers' Union, as this union has been tough with British Airways. However, British Airways cannot justify its attempts to scare cabin crew by stating that they could be sued for damages if they go on strike and that they could be dismissed for breaching their contract.

BA to jettison 10,000 workers

Article Abstract:

Moves at British Airways (BA) to reduce costs by 1 billion pounds sterling by the year 2000 will include shedding at least 10,000 of its more than 40,000 employees. It will focus on simply flying planes and dealing directly with customers, and will shed large parts of its other activities. It also plans to shift work abroad to countries where labour costs are much lower, such as India. Such moves could be followed by other large employers in the UK, thus having a serious impact on employment.
