Pushing up daisies
Article Abstract:
An exhibition by conceptual artist Tim Head at the Chatham Historic Dockyard in Chatham, England, is intended to boost the profile of both the arts and the dockyard. The installation has attracted considerable attention, and is particularly popular with local people. It includes a work entitled 'Blue Skies' which shows two rotating cows in a daisy field, with all the shapes having been made from hardboard. Head has gained a strong reputation for works which say a lot while using only limited resources.

Beatle fan who still has fairies at the bottom of his garden
Article Abstract:
The birth of a daughter in 1968 made artist Peter Blake consider whether he believed in fairies. He had never been convinced that fairies did not exist, so he chose to believe that they did. He deliberately made his paintings of fairies very much of their time, rather than giving them a historical vision. There is some solidity in the depiction to balance out the sense of otherness associated with fairies. He gains his inspiration from a range of sources, and rarely works from models.

Bridge to Utopia or blue ride to hell?
Article Abstract:
The Palazzo Grassi in Venice, Italy, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'German Expressionism: Art and Society.' This begins with a collection of dark and melancholy self-portraits by artists including Otto Dix, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Oskar Kokoschka. The most interesting element in the exhibition is a substantial collection of the work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, including some late brightly coloured landscapes and the city street scenes of his early years.
