Railway revival in a town like Alice

Article Abstract:

Travelling on the Ghan railway service between Alice Springs and Adelaide, Australia, used to be a very stressful experience. The train travelled extremely slowly, and the track was often washed away in flash floods. The journey, which took two days, was very uncomfortable. However, the situation has now improved greatly. Luxury rolling stock is now being used, the track has been rebuilt with concrete sleepers and the journey now only takes 22 hours.

Australian welcome leaves rescued yachtsman all at sea

Article Abstract:

Yachtsman Tony Bullimore, who was rescued after spending four days trapped in the hull of his upturned vessel, has been very warmly welcomed in Australia. He will receive medical treatment there, and has already been reunited with his wife, whom he has not seen since he set sail in the Vendee Globe race in Nov 1996. There is now strong competition to purchase his story, and there are even rumours that a film is to be made about his ordeal.

Politicians on the trail of electoral gold

Article Abstract:

The city of Bendigo, in the Australian state of Victoria, is seen as playing a key role in determining the outcome of the forthcoming general election. It is at the centre of one of the most marginal constituencies in Australia, and has a very high unemployment level. It has been held by Bruce Reid, a member of the opposition Liberal Party, since 1990, but changes to electoral boundaries have pushed it more towards the Labor Party.
