Rearguard action

Article Abstract:

An exhibition entitled 'British Figurative Art Painting 1: Painting - the Human Figure' is currently being held at Flowers East in London, England. This covers the work of 50 artists, and includes almost all living British figurative painters with a strong reputation. There are some negative aspects to the exhibition, especially the fact that it is being used by the gallery to display the work of all its own figurative artists. Furthermore, the works seem to be being exploited to defend the cause of figurative art.

A reputation that should be chiselled away

Article Abstract:

Henry Moore is widely seen as having been the UK's greatest living sculptor until his death in 1986. He made British sculpture known to the rest of the world, and was extremely influential. However, some observers believe that the quality of his actual work is overestimated, even though his reputation has remained unchallenged. He had a talent for seamlessly bringing together diverse elements, but his sculptures often do not blend in at all well with the natural landscapes in which he liked them to be placed.

Architecture: it's inevitable

Article Abstract:

Architecture is undeniably important, but for many people it remains totally uninteresting. It is all around us in the modern world, and there is clearly no alternative to it. However, it is easy to overlook its good points, and its critics can easily be put off by its hollowness, its omnipresence and its sheer scale.
