Recession-watch shifts to Berlin
Article Abstract:
The German economy declined by 9.4% in the fourth quarter of 1998, and economic performance has continued to be poor in 1999. If statistics indicate that Germany has suffered a technical recession, then there will be significant repercussions for the rest of Europe. The German economy remains very good at creating high quality goods, but is very poor at creating employment. Growth in unemployment will be limited because of the decline in the workforce, but it will be necessary to raise taxes to support social welfare costs.

Sleepy German giant begins to stir as euro-zone economies perk up
Article Abstract:
Germany has achieved only limited economic growth since autumn 1996, with unemployment remaining high. However, there are now signs that the economy is accelerating, with the reasons for poor economic performance, including the weakness of the property market, beginning to reverse. Economic revival in Germany will have a significant impact on neighbouring countries, as Germany has the largest economy of the euro-zone.

Policymakers can do little to stave off German recession
Article Abstract:
The cut in interest rates set to be implemented by the European Central Bank will not be sufficient to stop a recession in Germany. It seems likely that prices will have to fall in Germany as a result of the introduction of the euro in 2002, and this will play a role in creating very poor conditions for growth.
