Renegade unit 'stokes Pakistan violence.' (violent attacks by Haqiqi gunmen)
Article Abstract:
Violent incidents which are causing public outrage in Karachi, Pakistan, are not thought to be the result of clashes between rival gangs from the Sunni and Shia communities. It is more likely that they are the work of gunmen from an armed faction known as Haqiqi, which was initially formed by the Pakistani army to split the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MOM), which represents Indian Muslims who moved to Pakistan after partition in 1947. It is possible that Haqiqi has linked with the Soldiers of the Companions of the Prophet, a Sunni extremist group.

Karachi's murderous Genie forced back inside his bottle
Article Abstract:
Karachi's militants are losing their hold over the city as tough action by the police begins to take effect, according to General Naseerullah Babar, Pakistan's interior minister. He has gained a reputation for taking a very strong line against clan violence, being willing to introduce measures which his predecessors have shunned. He is particularly determined to eliminate the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM), an urban guerilla army with more than 1,400 activists.

Peace-makers fail to halt Karachi's self-destruction
Article Abstract:
Many observers now fear that Karachi is moving towards self-destruction, with 900 people having been killed in fighting in the last six months. There is very strong ethnic rivalry between the Pathans, Punjabis, Baluchis and Mohajirs, especially where they live in close proximity in slum areas such as Orangi. Slum dwellers were at one time encouraged to work together to improve living conditions, but now ethnic clashes are destroying normal life.
