Republicans in historic shift on arms

Article Abstract:

Sinn Fein and the IRA have been strongly opposed to the decommissioning of their weapons for many years. However, Sinn Fein has now indicated that the republicans are willing to take their weapons out of commission in return for a place in the Northern Irish government. Sinn Fein is seeking the immediate formation of a new Northern Ireland administration, while an interlocutor would be appointed between the IRA and the international decommissioning committee.

Beaten in the name of Ulster's rough justice

Article Abstract:

It is believed that loyalist paramilitaries were responsible for the violent attack on 13-year-old Ian Price in the mainly Protestant town of Newtownards, Northern Ireland. Victims of similar attacks undertaken previously in the area have attracted little sympathy, but the fact that this victim is only 13 years old has caused considerable shock. This attack comes at a critical time in the Northern Ireland peace process.

Hardliners defeat Trimble to throw Ulster into crisis

Article Abstract:

Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble has narrowly missed obtaining the necessary majority of Unionist Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), thus failing to be re-elected as Northern Ireland's First Minister. Efforts are now being made to persuade centrist MLAs to temporarily present themselves as Unionists in order to swing the balance in Trimble's favour.
