Marines defy rebels to airlift Westerners
Article Abstract:
There has been a mass exodus of foreigners from Sierra Leone as the activities of rebel troops make the situation there increasingly precarious. The rebels ordered ports and airports to be sealed, but 15 helicopters evacuating people from Freetown, Sierra Leone, to the helicopter carrier USS Kearsarge ignored the no-fly zone. There is a Nigerian-led peacekeeping force in Freetown, and this has been allowed to continue to control the airport.

The end of war - and peace
Article Abstract:
There were 30 civil wars being fought in 1995, all in countries with severe political difficulties, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. There were no wars between different countries. However, internal conflict can now cause just as much suffering as international wars, and can last for many years. There is still no international agreement on when civil war should become the concern of other countries.
