Royal intrigue cost Hassan his crown
Article Abstract:
The reasons why King Hussein of Jordan chose to name his son Abdullah as his heir, rather than his brother Crown Prince Hassan, are becoming clearer. It appears that Hassan made a number of significant errors of judgement, including allowing his wife, Princess Sarvath, to give the impression that she was making changes to the royal palace before King Hussein had even died. There was also concern that Hassan would want to name his son as crown prince, a move that would have been opposed by Queen Noor.

Princes and presidents bury a king as his people grieve
Article Abstract:
The funeral of King Hussein of Jordan presented a number of sharp contrasts. The ceremony itself, attended by many world leaders, was formal and Westernized. In contrast, the ordinary Jordanians observing the ceremony from a distance expressed their grief very openly. King Abdullah the Second and his two half-brothers, Crown Prince Hamzeh and Prince Hashem, gave the impression of participating in an unusual ritual, and seemed vulnerable. Jordan now faces an uncertain future.

'Plucky Little King' who earned the crown of peace in the Middle East
Article Abstract:
King Hussein of Jordan, who is now close to death following unsuccessful medical treatment in the US, appeared very reasonable compared with other Middle Eastern rulers. He placed great trust in others, hoping in this way to have trust returned, and was also an honourable man. However, he was cruelly betrayed on a number of occasions. His death will cause both Arabs and Israelis to fear for the future, as he frequently mitigated conflict between them.
