Rumblings of the Eighties echo in North and South

Article Abstract:

Unemployment has dropped to extremely levels in the south of the UK, while northern cities are experiencing unemployment rates as high as 12%. There is also a significant difference between house prices in the south and the north. In London, England, house price inflation is at 13%, while in some parts of the north prices are falling. The divergence in house prices will have a negative impact on regional labour market mobility, with unemployed people being unable to move to places where unemployment is very low.

Caution will be Brown's motto in the Budget run-up

Article Abstract:

UK Chancellor Gordon Brown will be able to claim when the Treasury's pre-Budget report is published on Nov 9, 1999, that he has adhered to his fiscal rules of only borrowing to fund investment and keeping net debt below 40% of gross domestic product. A deficit of 4 billion pounds sterling had been forecast in the Budget in 1999, but it is now clear that the economy is growing much more rapidly than anticipated. However, Brown will continue to be cautious until the Apr 2000 Budget.
