Salvatore Fiume

Article Abstract:

Artist Salvatore Fiume grew up in an area of Sicily which had a strong sense of history. He believed that his background was responsible for the fact that his work tended both towards a crude archaicism and towards a refined Arabian landscape. In his early years as an artist, he was influenced by the geometric paintings of De Chirico and the cityscapes of artists such as Carlo Carra and Mario Sironi. He undertook a number of important public commissions, including the Time Life building in New York, NY.

James Lee Byars

Article Abstract:

Performance artist James Byars based a great deal of his work around the theme of death. He allowed very simple objects to take on metaphysical meanings, and often used ephemeral, transient materials. In later life, his concepts began to include more solid forms, and his work started to resemble traditional sculpture. He was influenced by Zen and Noh, as well as by the conceptual practices of the 1960s.
