Shooting starlets, absent stars and the ghost of Fassbinder

Article Abstract:

The 1998 Berlin Film Festival has attracted very few celebrities. Ben Kingsley, president of the jury, feels that this event is mainly involved with a celebration of the art of filmmaking, and does not tend to be associated with the more glamorous side of the film industry. Media attention has turned to aspiring actors and actresses, with particular interest in child actors. The Women's Filmworkers Association has been drawing attention to the lack of films made by women at the festival.

From Deeley Plaza to the top of the heap

Article Abstract:

The leading film companies in the US are extremely competitive, according to Motion Picture Association of America Pres Jack Valenti. His main role is to encourage these companies to identify their common interests. The most significant change he has seen since he took up his position in 1966 has been the sharp rise in the cost of making a film. He is keen to ensure that overseas markets are open to US film companies, thus allowing them to recoup their costs.
