Shoppers go gullibly into sales frenzy

Article Abstract:

Most UK consumers are completely unaware of what shops can and cannot do when holding a sale, according to research by the Manchester School of Management. It is perfectly legal, for example, for a store to hold a constant sale, but most consumers do not realise this. They also do not realise that stores can raise prices just before a so-called sale and then reduce them, thus appearing to offer bargains. Even consumers who are aware that stores are breaking regulations about holding sales generally do not report these stores to Trading Standards officers.

Who'd be a nurse?

Article Abstract:

The number of people entering the nursing profession has fallen to its lowest since records began, according to the United Kingdom Central Council of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting. The nursing population is becoming older, and nurses recruited from abroad now account for one in four new registrations. Nurses resent the fact that their pay does not reflect the responsibilities they bear and the hours they work. Problems have also arisen as a result of efforts to make nursing more academic.

Article Abstract:

Most shoppers are being very cautious about their choice of presents for Christmas 1995, according to the British Retail Consortium. They are focusing on less expensive items and gifts which are useful. Small retailers are facing very strong competition as shoppers seek better value for money by going to large stores and out-of-town shopping centres.
