Short-term approach by British business holds back investment

Article Abstract:

It is very difficult to find a single reason why investment in the UK and the US is lower than in continental Europe or Japan. In the UK, there is evidence that investment is being restricted because many companies are uncertain about the business environment. Uncertainty is worse in the UK than in other countries because it is not yet clear whether the UK will join the European single currency, or possibly even leave the European Union altogether. Against this background, it is not really possible to recommend public policies to deal with the investment problem.

Slowly but surely, the crisis in state pensions is coming

Article Abstract:

Politicians in many industrialised countries are now beginning to accept that changes in pension provision will have to be made soon if serious fiscal difficulties are to be avoided. Pension problems have been caused by the rise in the number of pensioners, combined with pay-as-you-go state pension schemes. It is now clear that such schemes can no longer be sustained, and they are now gradually being abandoned. This move will have serious macroeconomic implications.
