Si, si, nous sommes des rock stars

Article Abstract:

The French government has been attempting for some time to promote the country's pop music industry, ensuring that it is not overshadowed by imported music. This strategy has proved successful, with French pop music productions now accounting for more than 50% of national consumption. Certain types of French pop music, especially techno and rap, are also beginning to establish a positive reputation abroad. The 1999 series of Francofolies open-air concerts in La Rochelle, France, included many young performers reworking chanson traditions.

Time to adjust the time balance

Article Abstract:

Soca, the Trinidadian music is competing with reggae, the indigenous music of Jamaica for popularity in Jamaica. Reggae is considered political music which reminds the listener of socio-economic conditions whereas soca is criticized as just party music. The Towns & Communities Act, Section 14 covers noise disturbance and fines of up to 10,000 Jamaican dollars can be made. Accusations of police harassment have been made since the Front Line dance in 1991 when 100 policemen raided and gunshots were fired.
