Silent days in the park: a film-maker's eerie record

Article Abstract:

The fact that television is under great pressure to explain events can be a serious problem, according to television director Richard Alwyn. He did not feel this pressure when he decided to make a documentary about the reaction to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, as reflected in events in Hyde Park, London, England. He was fascinated by the public reaction to the tragedy, and spent a lot of time photographing and interviewing people who had gathered in Hyde Park. He wanted to convey the mystery of the public reaction, rather than dwelling on its more extreme manifestations.

Spliff, wobble, splice! Now dance DJs are doing film music

Article Abstract:

A number of UK composers of modern dance music have recently becoming involved in writing music for existing films as part of a project set up by Sigh and Sound magazine. This has resulted in 'Score,' a collection of alternative, electronic soundtracks which will be shown around the UK and then be performed live in London on Nov 21, 1996. Composers involved in the project include Andrew Weatherall, Andy Sheriff and Matthew Hammond.

The Pleasance picture palace in Edinburgh claims to be the smallest cinema in the world. It is only 6 ft x 12 ft, but its interior is designed in the same style as a full size cinema. It is showing a wide range of films as part of the fringe element of the Edinburgh festival, and has received funding from MGM.
