Snake breeders have refined "quality." (captive snake breeding) (On Herptiles) (Column)

Article Abstract:

Captive breeding of snakes has been refined and provides more economical benefits than catching snakes in the wild. Since 1970 advances have been made that enables breeders to mate snakes successfully to produce viable eggs which hatch in incubators. The snakelets usually number by the thousands, have less infestations and easily adapt to a diet of baby mice. Thus, a snake breeder has to provide temperature-controlled housing and set up his own colonies of breeder mice for the feed. This set-up allows selective breeding of various snake varieties and also leaves the wild snakes untouched.

PIJAC's balance sheet looks healthy for remainder of 1992

Article Abstract:

The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council's (PIJAC) financial statement showed a positive $68,000 balance for Jan through Aug 1992 and the organization is expected to show a profit for the remaining months of the year. Income from dues was lower than expected due to the depressed economy. PIJAC approved a contract with a Kansas veterinary school to research on methods for handling puppies and kittens that would help ensure the health of these animals. The Pet Care Trust registered over $850,000 in endowed principal and is poised to meet its goal of raising $3 million by 1995.
