So, have the experts anything to be proud of? Well, yes

Article Abstract:

The Independent newspaper asked five leading independent financial advisers to invest a notional 10,000 pounds sterling for a hypothetical client at the beginning of 1997. Philippa Gee was aiming for long-term growth for a couple who wanted a mainly conservative investment strategy but were willing to take on a small amount of risk. Half the money was invested in Schroder's UK Equity Fund. Bhupinder Anand invested 3,500 pounds sterling in Schroder's Far Eastern Growth unit trust, while Roddy Kohn recommended Banker's Investment Trust from Henderson Investors and Kleinwort Benson's Charter Investment Trust.

Dogfights over PEP performances

Article Abstract:

Financial services concern Virgin Direct has attracted considerable controversy by publishing a list of 24 personal equity plans (PEPs) which it believes have shown poor performance compared with the average of other PEPs. It is certainly true that investors may be able to gain benefits by transferring from PEPs which are not performing well. However, they must consider whether they are prepared to accept higher risk in return for higher income, and must take care to seek high quality independent advice.

Right side of the tracks

Article Abstract:

Tracker funds have performed much more strongly than managed funds since 1995. Some observers believe that this situation is now set to change as stock markets fall. However, there is evidence to suggest that most actively managed funds will not perform better than tracker funds when markets are falling. Experts believe that trackers should form one element of an overall investment portfolio, but that it is advisable to diversify to cut risk.
