Why Labour may retreat on the Lords

Article Abstract:

A new Labour government under Tony Blair would not be able to undertake meaningful constitutional reform unless it was really determined to deal with all the difficult issues which this would involve. It would have to develop an extremely sound formula for changing the structure of the House of Lords if reform were not to be hindered by Conservative peers. It would also have to be very sure that any reform measures would work in practice.

Judges vs the Government

Article Abstract:

The UK's judges have traditionally been seen as strong supporters of Conservative governments, but this is no longer the case. They are increasingly willing to express strong views, and are prepared to stand firm against the government on many issues. The government has responded by threatening to remove some of the judges' discretion on sentencing.
