Soldiers' deaths that haunt west Belfast

Article Abstract:

Campaigns are running against the legal system which dealt with the defendants accused of the murders of Derek Wood and David Howes, soldiers who accidentally drove into an IRA funeral in west Belfast on Mar 19 1988.The 'Casement accused relatives committee' believes officials vindictively persecuted the community and the Committee on the Administration of Justice shows concern over alleged community harassment and special procedures. Different judges took different approaches and sentences were inconsistent; the unprecedented, unique circumstances of the event were ignored. Two reports criticising the trials will be published in May 1992.

In Belfast, they still vote early and often

Article Abstract:

Personation, or vote-stealing, has been part of the political culture in Northern Ireland for many years. Electoral authorities acknowledge that irregularities do take place, but feel that this is not a serious problem. This view is not shared by some observers, who believe that vote-stealing is widespread. Legislation has been tightened up in recent years, but the problem still persists. It may significantly affect the outcome of the vote in the marginal constituencies of West Belfast, Mid-Ulster and West Tyrone in the forthcoming general election.

Tory anger as European Court condemns Gibraltar killings

Article Abstract:

The UK government has reacted very negatively to a ruling by a Strasbourg court which condemns the SAS killing of three IRA terrorists on Gibraltar in 1988. It will now reconsider its support for the European Convention on Human Rights, although it is unlikely to withdraw completely from the convention. The court ruled that the killing of the terrorists was unnecessary, although it has not required the government to order compensation to be paid to the families of the victims.
