Sons and lovers

Article Abstract:

It is very common for fathers who leave their partners to lose contact with their children. However, mothers can take a number of different approaches if they wish to ensure that this does not happen. In some cases, the parents are able to reach an agreement between themselves about access, without needing to involve the courts. If possible, it is important to avoid very strained relations, as this is likely to have negative impact on the children. Allowing regular access can be difficult, but reaps benefits for the children in the long term.

A fantasy of socks and violence

Article Abstract:

Ex-Monty Python star Terry Jones has written children's stories including origninal, modern fairy tales. He believes children need a faster pace of story in the 1990s. He likes the fact that a moral in the story gives it an anchor despite the fantasy. His book 'Fantastic Stories' is shortlisted for the 1992 Smarties Prize. The stories demonstrate mistrust of authority and have politically correct heroines. His experience as a screen-writer is helpful to his book illustrator Michael Foreman.

Farewell fast cars, hello children

Article Abstract:

There is a small but steady flow of people in the UK who give up highly paid jobs in areas such as banking, accountancy or advertising to retrain for teaching. Some find that teaching offers them constant new challenges, which they welcome, while others enjoy the support they get from colleagues. They are able to spend more time with their family, and also derive benefits from forming relationships with their pupils.
